Boyhood and Beyond & Created for Work

Boyhood and Beyond along with Created for Work by Bob Schultz were on my book wish-list for a long time. I finally went ahead and ordered them. It is more difficult to find good books about raising boys than girls. Boyhood and Beyond: Practical Wisdom for Becoming a Man is geared towards younger boys (from age 10-18), to motivate them to start on the road to becoming spiritual men. Created for Work: Practical Insights for Young Men, for young men a little older (starting at age 12), is about developing "a healthy attitude toward work". Both books are designed to be read a little at a time: short chapters with discussion questions at the end. These books would be great for fathers and sons reading aloud together or for young people's group discussions. These books are truly a blessing for those trying to raise Godly men!

Be Ye Transformed

Be Ye Transformed, Volumes I, II, & III, contain many of Brother G.V. Growcott's exhortations and articles. There are over ninety writings all together in these three books. Brother G.V. does not "beat around the bush" but firmly expresses Biblical truths. When interested in a subject, I check to see if he has written anything about it. Most likely, he has and I enjoy reading his expositions to further my understanding.

Lessons from Nature

For the first time I am recommending a book I have not read yet. My mom is currently reading Lessons from Nature and the Spirit's Revelation of the Things concerning Christ, a collection of articles by Sister Alice Hopkins, every night and shares bits and pieces with me. It's amazing how many lessons we can draw from the natural world to apply to the spiritual. Sister Alice Hopkins has a knack for making the reader feel as though she is speaking directly to them in person. G.E. Mansfield states in the forward, "We hope it will provide many enjoyable hours of delightful and meditative reading. Since each chapter is complete in itself, the reader can select any one and enjoy a fifteen minute contemplative reading. Not only will this provide an outline of the beauties of the divine handiwork, but draw the mind to reflect upon the spiritual principles therein" (p. 6). Well said! I plan to read this, Lord willing, this year.

Psychological Seduction

Reading "Psychological Seduction: The Failure of Modern Psychology" written by William Kirk Kilpatrick is enough to make you say, "Wow!". Today, we don't even realize the amount of human thinking that is put into everything we observe and hear. Please take the time to read this book to open your eyes to how much psychology has not just crept in but sprinted into the ecclesia. Why does it often take someone from outside to open our eyes? This man does not have everything correct, but it is definitely worth reading and studying. We simply cannot mix the ways of men with the ways of God.

Conviction and Conduct

A few years ago I tried to read this book but without success. Recently, I have read parts of it. The pages out of Conviction and Conduct:The Faith that Works by Islip Collyer are intensely humbling and motivating. He reviews the philosophy of faith and living the life of faith. Reading this book is time well spent.

Help & Comfort from the Scriptures

The pamphlet, Help and Comfort from the Scriptures, was an adult class given at the Canadian Bible School in 1954 by Brother John Peake. He aptly describes help and comfort then goes on to explain how we may qualify for them. The last two lessons include obtaining help and comfort and the power of prayer. This booklet is honest and forthright. Whether in tribulation or not, it is an inspiration of God's love and concern for those striving to become better servants of Him.

He Healeth all Thy Diseases

Brother Dennis Gillett wrote the book, He Healeth all Thy Diseases: Exhortations on spiritual health for the disciple, based upon real illnesses of the body. He compares physical and mental problems to spiritual ailments, providing the diagnosis and proper treatment of such. "It is sent forth in the hope that it may be a provocation to any who read it [the book] to seek spiritual health with the same fervour and the same anxiety that energises the search for bodily soundness." ~p.vi

"Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's." ~Psalm 103:1-5

Search Me, O God by Gilbert V. Growcott motivates the reader to no longer be satisfied with complacent spirituality. Growcott awakens the mind to the seriousness of serving God and not the petty things of self or the world. These short snippets of writing can be read daily for inspiration to live a more godly life.
